Registering and Voting in Midland County

You must register before you can vote in any election. It is an easy process:

You must be...

You can register to vote at your county clerk's, city clerk's or township clerk's office or at the Secretary of State branch office (Where to Register to Vote). You must register at least 30 days before the election to give the clerk time to process the forms and send you a Voter Identification Card.

You may register by mail by calling or contacting your county or local clerk's office. You may also register at the same time you renew your driver's license by mail. Eligible drivers will receive a voter registration application in the mail with their driver license renewal forms. If you do register by mail, you must vote in person at your assigned precinct the first time you vote unless you are handicapped, 60 years old or over or temporarily residing overseas. Call your city or township clerk if you do not receive your voter I.D. card within three weeks after you register.

To vote:

Simply appear at your polling place on election day. The polls are open from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. Your voter identification card lists a precinct number and should give you the address of your polling place.

To vote by absent voter ballot:

You may vote with an absent voter ballot if:

You can get an absent voter ballot by writing to your city clerk or township clerk. You must state the reason why you need an absent voter ballot and you must sign your request. If you prefer, there is a preprinted absent voter ballot application form available from your city or township clerk upon request.

Send the completed application form or letter to your city clerk or township clerk. (Send the application to your school district for school elections and your village clerk for village elections.) If you want the ballot mailed, your application must be received by 2 p.m. the Saturday before election and should be made as early as possible to allow for delivery time. All absent voter ballots must be received by the clerk's office not later than 8 p.m. on election day.

You may vote by absent voter ballot in person at your clerk's office anytime up to 4 p.m. the day before the election.

You may be eligible for an emergency absent voter ballot if a family death or illness requires you to leave your community on election day or if you are unable to attend the polls because of an emergency personal illness or accident. Have someone deliver your written and signed request for an emergency absent voter ballot to the clerk's office before 4 p.m. on election day. The ballot must be returned by 8 p.m. on election day.
