Making Democracy Work Award 2011

Making Democracy Work Award to Honor Leader in Education

The League of Women Voters of Midland Area is pleased to announce that the winner of the 2011 Making Democracy Work Award is Dr. Richard Dolinski.

His contributions to education in the Midland community include:

  • Service as a member and Chair of the Delta College Board of Trustees
  • Current membership on the Delta College Foundation Board of Directors
  • Current membership on the Midland Area Community Foundation Board of Directors
  • Current service as the executive director of the Literacy Council of Midland County
  • Current service as the founder and president of The Legacy Center for Student Success in Midland

Dr. Dolinskiexemplifies leadership in working to insure quality and equitable educational opportunities within Midland and the wider Midland Area by his almost continuous involvement with institutions of learning in this area as noted above. He served his community concurrently with a 32-year professional career at The Dow Chemical Company.

Dr. Dolinski had the vision to found The Legacy Center for Student Success, a non-profit organization that seeks to overcome impediments to student learning that are not school related. The Center has teamed with the Midland Area Community Foundation and the Health and Human Services Council of Midland County to develop the Midland County Youth Master Plan to inspire and guide Midland County youth oriented organizations to support and provide positive opportunities for our youth to flourish and thrive.

Countless young people have benefitted directly and indirectly from Dr. Dolinski's efforts to increase literacy and to raise awareness that there are learning issues outside the classroom that need to be addressed along with the regular curriculum.
